As always, the abilities of my pupils to rise to a challenge, adapt and accept the new continue to amaze me. Without a doubt, I owe the positive feelings I have been left with after this week to them.
Is it actually possible to be around children, of any age, and not crack a smile at some of the absurd situations they find themselves in? There is a futility in pretending that the thing-that-just-happened in your classroom was in no way amusing whilst the other thirty people in that room all roll around across their desks laughing. Want to appear ridiculous and out of touch in the ideas of your pupils? Do this.
My enemy is conformity; my weapons are self-expression and conviction, and I will continue to gently rebel in every way it is safe to do so.
Why is integrity important in our professional lives? Taking integrity to mean "being consistently true to one's values", it means teachers standing by what they believe in and acting in ways that project those beliefs.
As a musician as well as a teacher, I have always thought of teaching as a kind of performance. Each day, I get into costume, take to the stage and greet my audience.
But if I am the performer, then who is the character on stage? Where did he come from, and at what point does the performance begin and end?
